Better out than in! Local Drama festival aims to get local people healthier!
“Act it Out” Community Drama Festival – Monday 12th July to Wednesday 21st July

Produced by Dingle Community Theatre. Supported by Liverpool City Council, Grass Roots Innovators Programme.
Preparations are fully underway for the “Act it Out” Community Drama festival being held in the Liverpool 8 area this summer.
The festival, produced by Dingle Community Theatre, aims to show the health benefits offered by Drama by giving opportunities for people to take part in performance-related activities.
4 different strands of Dramatic activity will target all age groups.
*A Junior school play at St Finbars will focus on spiritual well-being performed by young people at the school.
*Perform L8 Youth Drama Group, based at the Kuumba Imani Millenium Centre, will move and act in a Drum-inspired performance looking at the poem “Limbo” by Kamau Brathwaite.
* Dingle Community Theatre Adult Group, who meet every Monday at the Casa Club n Hope Street, will perform their devised drama, with a health related theme.
* The “Slice of Health” script-writing competition, open to the public, will see the 3 winning writers’ short dramas performed by auditioned local actors.
A selection of work from each strand will be performed between July 12th and the 21st at the following venues: The Casa, Hope Street; Mt Carmel Catholic Social Club, High Park Street, L8; The Black-e Centre, Gt George’s Street; the Caribbean Centre, Amberley Street, L8; Joe H Makin Drama Centre, Pilgrim Street.

Healthy Appetite for Writing?

Opportunity for local writers in new writing competition, Dingle Community Theatre are looking for 3 short scripts for their Summer Community Drama festival, “Act it Out”, funded by NHS and Liverpool City Council’s under the Grassroots Innovators Arts Programme.

Writers who would like the chance of seeing their plays produced and performed – as well as picking up an £100 award for their efforts! – should submit short plays of approximately 30 minutes duration, with no more than three characters, two of which must be female.
The plays must connect in some way with the City Council’s current Year of Health and Well-being.

Directors wanted for Slice of Health plays, June to July, Dingle Community Theatre’s Summer “Act it Out” event
Variety of performance venues being considered, including the Joe Makin, the Casa, Mt Carmel, the Blackie.
Following the tradition of our group, to encourage new and local talent, we are asking for people to direct 3 chosen short plays, for our Summer event, the “Act it Out” drama event, funded by Liverpool City Council and the NHS.
The plays will be chosen by a panel, from our script competition entries.
We would like to appoint a director for each play. There is a small fee of £100 for each director, but we are hoping to attract either experienced directors who like the idea of working with us, or for a community event, or people who are inexperienced at directing but have always thought they would like to try their hand.
The plays are limited to a small number of actors and will be suitable for small venue performances.
Rehearsal space will be found for the plays and auditions publicised. Each director would be expected to attend the auditions and make casting decisions. They would also be expected to be prepared to take on the play the panel allotted them from within the plays chosen.

Dingle Community Theatre Community Drama group meets every Monday evening at the Casa on Hope Street. The group is a good mix of experienced actors and new recruits and the facilitator will have support form the group and DCT as an organization.
The theme of this year’s festival is the Health and Wellbeing, to tie in with general City Council / NHS themed year.
We are looking for applicants with the following:

* Commitment to and awareness of the importance of Diversity and equal opportunities in modern organisations.

the project will end in 4 shortish performances of plays around the theme of May Day...one venue will be the casa but other venues may be sought out. . some of the performances will be scripted. people can send in scripts. a panel will chose those they think suit the group and the occasion best.
at least one piece (possibly more) will be devised during the monday night sessions.

jeni from lipa will lead this week's workshop. We intend to keep some of each session for skills building...so if you're not interested in performing just workshopping please still come along
all welcome....we envisage parts enough for all to take part
a small charge will be collected each monday night to help with the cost of the hire of the casa (£2 waged £1 unwaged)

Dingle community theatre new project starts Monday at the casa 7.30PM

Flying high after our successful panto, the regular Monday night workshops are back this Monday coming, 1st march, at 7.30pm

A guest actor will be giving a one hour improvisation workshop. This will then be followed by a discussion run by the projects cttee, the point of which is to consult the group and ask for ideas for what you want to do for our next project.

The next project will probably end in a performance around May 1st.

So come along and have your say or just enjoy the workshop. All welcome.

Notice of an Extraordinary General Meeting: Tuesday 16th March, Charles Dickens Centre, Weller Way L8, 7.30pm

The Committee is recommending that Dingle Community Theatre becomes "a company limited by guarantee" under the Companies Act. This probably sounds complicated, and it does actually involve us in going through a few formal procedures - but as far as all our members are concerned, there will be no change whatsoever. The purpose of going through this is to put DCT on a more secure financial footing, and it is all explained in the attached document.

This refers to a new form of constitution, called "Memoranda and Articles of Association", which we have drafted with the help of people who know what they are doing. The Committee has been through this with a fine tooth comb and we can assure you that the differences between that and the old constitution are minor and are only there at all to conform with the law. Of course, copies will be available at the EGM and if you wish you can request one in advance which can be sent to you either by email or by post.

The EGM, which the Committee is calling with the necessary 21 days' notice, will consider only the following agenda items:

To approve Memoranda and Articles of Association for a new company to be known as "Dingle Community Theatre Ltd".

To authorise the Committee of the existing Dingle Community Theatre to register the new company at Companies House.

To prepare for the winding up at the next AGM of the existing Dingle Community Theatre and the transfer of assets to the new company.

Why?

• The Management Committee members (the “Trustees”) are responsible for all the debts of Dingle Community Theatre, and if anything went wrong with our finances,

Why would anyone want to be a Trustee

with that hanging over them?

• If we become a “Company Limited by Guarantee”,

our liability

- the amount we would have to pay if DCT ran into financial difficulties -

would be no more than £2 per member

– that is the “guarantee”, a limited liability.

• This stabilises the organisation and makes it secure.

“Dingle Community Theatre Ltd”

would have the same aims and rules as DCT

and would take on all its assets and liabilities.

How does this affect me as a member?

In short – not at all!

In theory you would be liable, as a member, to pay up to £2 to cover the debts of Dingle Community Theatre Ltd if it was ever wound up.

In practice, the first year of your subs (£2) will be used as a joining fee, and kept in a separate account, so you would never have to pay anything to cover the debts of the theatre company.

You have to be over 16 to be a member

- but if you are under 16, you can still participate in activities.

How do we become

a Company Limited by Guarantee?

The steps we have to take…

1. We have to draw up

“Memoranda and Articles of Association”

for the new “Dingle Community Theatre Ltd”

to replace the Constitution of DCT.

(This has already been done

with the help of experts at Liverpool CVS.)

2. At a meeting (to be held in March)

we have to decide whether to go ahead with this proposal

and get your agreement

to the new “Memoranda and Articles of Association”.

3. The Committee then have to register

“Dingle Community Theatre Ltd” at Companies House

before the AGM (in the Autumn)

- at a cost of £20.

4. At the AGM, with your agreement,

• we wind up “Dingle Community Theatre”,

and transfer all the money and assets

- and the debts and liabilities -

to “Dingle Community Theatre Ltd”.

• we elect the Trustees of the new limited company

During the Agm, Ronnie Edwards and Lesley Hendry will be giving a short illustrated presentation “Edinburgh fringe festival and how to get a play on”. Ronnie and Lesley took a play there last summer. panto director/organiser - applications welcome

Applications welcome – post of Community Panto Director/deviser - £500 - to lead and facilitate our Community Panto – proposed date Feb 2010

2 years ago we produced a very successful Community Panto in the Dingle, "Cinderella and her American Fella."

We want to do the same again in 2010 with a different panto, although keeping to the same style – a healthy respect for the traditional panto and plot but updating it with modern elements and giving it a local flavour. The panto would involve actors from our adult and youth groups, but would also give opportunities for local people to take part.

We’re looking for an imaginative, resourceful person to lead the project and direct the play.

The person would need to have a current CRB Clearance

They would be assisted by our youth group co-ordinator, our management and projects cttee.

We would be looking to start the project immediately upon appointing the person and are looking at dates in early February to hold the actual panto.

There will be a budget, but as is the way in Community Arts, it will be limited and thus key qualities in the successful applicant will be resourcefulness and imagination in running a show on a low budget. Experience in running Community Drama events is also a plus.

Panto Ho!

Dingle's Panto project for early 2010 is going ahead! Our management ctte met last wek and agreed to advertise for the post of organiser. We'll be looking for funding in the meantime but the group has committed itself to it so rehearsals will be starting soon.
We are very enthusiastic about making it even more of a success than our last very successful panto, "Cinderella and her American Fella". (see image)
There will be 4 performances at the beginning of 2010.

We're back!

Dingle community theatre's regular open Drama workshop "night at the casa" will begin again at 8pm on monday 7th september.

The first night will be a discussion/chat night to discuss what types of workshops you would like there to be on the monday and what kind of style you'd like them to be.

All those who would like to work with us in the new season or simply attend the workshops as a leisure activity are welcome to come along.

We will also be encouraging people to become members (only £2 per annum). This amongst other things will enable you to attend ther forthcoming agm.

-“A Job Well Done” by Michelle Greer. It's a war out there and everyone is feeling the pinch. A Job Well Done is one man's story of what can happen when we are pushed to the limits.
- “A Slice of Cake” by Pauline Kennedy. Through the cakes she bakes Jen tells us the story of her life’s highs and lows..

One of the 20th century’s Big books, (“The Workers’ Bible”)adapted for today. ( First commissioned by PCS for Unions 08 in Liverpool and performed in Liverpool to great acclaim.)

Often called "The Workers' Bible", "The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists" has been one of the most influential books of Modern times. It was often said that the book won Labour the 1946 General Election, when a stunned Tory party saw Winston Churchill defeated at the polls.

The book is undoubtedly the first realistic fictional portrayal of life amongst the working classes, brilliantly analysing the power structures that keep the status quo stable, even when people are clearly ill-treated and abused.

This adaptation honours the original, while tailoring the action for a modern audience – for how much has changed? Tressell wrote about a time of boom and bust; of high unemployment; of a slump in the building trade; of graft, sleaze and downright thieving amongst politicians and the wealthy. Sound familiar?

This adaptation was commissioned by PCS for Unions 08 – the Trade Unions contribution to Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year, where it won great acclaim from enthusiastic audiences.

Dramatic Connections in the Dingle - (Thanks to the City of Liverpool for its financial support)

Dingle Community Theatre is starting on its Summer Community Drama Project, with what sems to be one of the most interesting yet, in our ten year (at least) continuous series of Summer Community Drama Festivals in the Dingle and neighbouring areas.

Our 09 Festival - Dramatic Connections in the Dingle - will pull together different strands of our activities.

Our community inclusive adult group will be working on a short play, so will our Youth Group, Perform L8, and this year St Finbar's Junior school in the Dingle will be working on a drama project relating to bees!

We also have our "Slice of Life" dramas...the result of a public script-writing competition.

our Chaucer adaptation went really well with a great night to finish at the casa.

our new project is one with an environmental theme and julian bond will be the group facilitator. he wants to have a first meeting this thursday, the 28th, at LIPA.6.45pm...meet in the reception area. look on the lipa page for directions if you don't know where it is...it's on upper duke st, opposite the anglican cathedrqal and up a bit.

Chaucer wrote the Canterbury Tales in the 14th Century. Each tale was told by a different Pilgrim travelling on the annual Holy pilgrimage to the shrine of Sir Thomas Becket.In the local group’s modern adaptation, the pilgrims are on their way to Lourdes, and the Merchant gets his young wife from an internet site devoted to finding rich old men brides from poor areas of Europe.

Devotees of Chaucer and classical literature will not be disappointed, however, as the adaptation sticks closely to the original storyline - including some naughty antics up a tree! The play will be performed at Mt Carmel Catholic Social Club, High Park Street on Thursday 21st May, and The Casa Club, Hope Street, Liverpool on Saturday 23rd May. Performances start at 7.30pm and cost £4/3 concessions.

Actors Wanted for “Slice of Life” Dramas

Dingle Community Theatre are looking for actors for their forthcoming Summer “Slice of Life” Dramas to be performed at the Casa Club, Hope St, Liverpool in early July.
The scripts to be performed have been chosen from members of the public who entered the group’s “Slice of Life” writing competition. The festival is being supported by Liverpool City Council’s Arts and Cultural Unit.
Auditions will be held at the Charles Dickens Centre 6pm on Tuesday 12th May and are open to all budding actors of adult years.

The Merchant's Tale by Chaucer is a raunchy affair, a comic triangle of rich old man, young wife and randy man-servant. Somehow, though Chaucer turns it into an ironic human story of vanity and self-deception.

For their forthcoming adaptation of the tale, Dingle Community Theatre have kept the original plot (more or less) but updated it to modern times.

Dramatic Connections in the Dingle Summer 09…call for Directors
Ever fancied your hand at Directing?
Dingle Community Theatre are looking for people to direct 3 plays from their “Slice of Life” script-writing competition.
The plays are approximately 30-40 minutes long, written for a small cast, and will be performed at the Casa on July 1st, 6th and 7th as part of our “Dramatic Connections in the Dingle” festival, supported by Liverpool City Council.
We are asking would-be directors to apply by short letter (no more than two sides of a4) to The Secretary, 282 Beaufort Street, Liverpool L8 6UA or email to info@dinglecommunitytheatre.co.uk.
The letter should put forward why you should be given the chance of directing one of the plays.
It is expected that rehearsals would take place between late May through June.
The deadline to get your letter of application in is Monday 27th April 09

From time to time if we get funding for our projects, we advertise for sessinal workers or facilitators to help us. uusually it's to work with Junior Schools, or the Youth Group, but sometimes we like to invite guests to work with the community (adult). The successful applicant will be expected to initiate and develop a short 30 minute approx. ensemble, inclusive production with our established Community Adult Group, for performance at our Summer Drama festival in July. The group is a good mix of experienced actors and new recruits and the facilitator will have support form the group and DCT as an organization. LIPa Improvisation project – thursdays 7.30, starting 19th March

Every Thursday at LIPa (meet in the main foyer) 7.30pm -the LIPa building is on Mount st, opposite the Anglican Cathedral and up the hill a bit.

The project theme is the environment and at the moment, there are 5 different organizations who will be taking part including Huyton Child Center, Wicked Fish and Wirral grammar school, and, of course, Dingle Community Theatre.

Tomo, Anna and Jess from the LIPA Community Drama Course will be leading the project, getting the create a ten min.piece for the
performance at the Sennheiser studio space in LIPA on 12th of May.

Like writing drama? Want to get a short play produced and performed?
Dingle Community Theatre is about to run its second series of “Slice of Life” Dramas.
The format for the project is roughly the same as the last one – writers are invited to submit 30 minute – 40 minute scripts. These will be read by a panel nominated by Dingle Community Theatre Project Committee and the best 3 selected for performance.
No panel member will be able to submit a script to the

competition.

Dingle Community Theatre will produce the 3 plays as part of its Summer activities, probably in lateJune/early July, auditioning for actors, and facilitating the staging of the play at the best venues it can.
The idea of the title: “Slice of Life”, is to encourage writers to write honestly about the world as they see it, without feeling pressured to produce “gags” or contrived plot-twists, just for the sake of pleasing an audience. Good, gritty drama that addresses real issues is what we want.
· scripts should be sent to The Secretary, Dingle Community Theatre, 282 Beaufort Street, Liverpool L8 6UA
· Scripts should be clearly typed or written, on a4 paper, with the title clearly written at the front. Pages should be numbered, and not stapled as the script will have to be photocopied. A paper clip or other such fastening is fine.
· No emailed scripts will be accepted.
· Please check the postage is right…we can’t pick up or pay if postage is incorrect.
· The writer’s name should not appear on the script anywhere. Instead, a covering letter should be enclosed along with the script, with the name of the play and the name and contact details of the author clearly written. Pseudonyms can be used.
· Plays needing more than six actors will not be considered. As a general guide, think small numbers of actors, and don’t insist on difficult or expensive sets or staging.
· Plays which are obviously over the 40 minute slot will not be considered. Try reading it out with some friends to gauge the length if you’re not sure.
· Writers may be allowed to direct their own plays but if they don’t wish to, a director will be appointed.
· The final date for entries to arrive is Sat April 18th 09.

Perform L8, Dingle Community theatre's Youth Group, which meets in the Kuumba Imani centre every Monday, is well into its latest project...to be performed at the Gladstone Theatre in Spring as part of the Leverhulme Drama festival.

The piece they will be doing is on Homelessness and is loosely based on the book "Stone Cold" which follows the adventures of a young homeless person in London.

Lipa project

Tomoko, our member from Japan, has invited the group to take part in a Lipa Community drama Project coming up in April. Five different groups from across liverpool will be worked with to create 10 minute improvisations on the theme of the environment. The pieces will be performed at Lipa, and connected together by students from the Community Drama Course.

Tomoko and Anna, a fellow student, put the idea to Dingle Community Theatre's community drama group at the Casa last monday and got a good reception.

Tomoko and Anna will now lead a special workshop on March 9th.

The community Group is proving quite popular at the Casa and is working on a Chaucer piece to be performed at the Casa and maybe elsewhere (see previous posts)

Talking of the Environment, it was good to hear about a new Tesco's to be built on Park Road, near our stomping grounds in the Dingle.

But, is anything being built in the community apart from Houses and supemarkets?

What about a theatre? Or places for people to meet and be creative? Isn't Social Cohesion supposed to be a priority? We've been campaigning for a Theatre in the Dingle for ages...what do you think?
